Avril Lavigne slammed for ‘offensively racist’ Hello Kitty music video
The critics are pouncing on Avril Lavigne.
The Canadian singer’s latest music video, for single Hello Kitty, has been met with almost universal scorn, with the four-minute long clip decried by critics as everything from lazy and embarrassing to “the worst thing you’ll watch all week.”
The video for Hello Kitty, the third single from Lavigne’s self-titled 2013 album, landed late Tuesday. In it, the pop songstress cavorts with a group of stonefaced Japanese women as she puts forward her best “arigato” and suggests that she and a pal “roll around in our underwear, how every silly kitty should be.”
The U.K. Mirror seemed lukewarm on the video, designating it “so bad that it’s actually quite good, a bit like anything by Rebecca Black.”
Hello Kitty feels like staring into the vacuum
“Avril’s new song borrows some of Skrillex’s trademark noises,” The Mirror notes under a header claiming that Hello Kitty sounds like “a Skrillex song that got lodged in a dishwasher.”
“but there are also bits where Avril is ‘shredding her guitar’ and strutting around and it all feels like several noisy things are trying to happen at the same time.”
Idolator was a bit more concise with their criticism, posting the video under the headline “Avril Lavigne’s ‘Hello Kitty’ Video Is Probably The Worst Thing You’ll Watch All Week.”
“To be honest, I kind of shut down physically and emotionally after the first four seconds here,” writer Robbie Daw notes, taking particular issue with Lavigne’s juvenile themes — and behaviour — in the track’s music video. “Has anyone reminded Avril that she’s nearly 30 lately?”
Meanwhile, Entertainment Weekly put on its best cultural criticism cap and made a very respectable attempt at explaining the video in the context of Lavigne’s career history and Hello Kitty‘s obvious similarities to Gwen Stefani’s Harajuku Girl-stocked Hollaback Girl — though writer Darren Franich still didn’t seem to be able to find any merits in the pastel-hued clip.
“The simplest way to understand what’s happening here is that Avril Lavigne had her most iconic moment astride the pop zeitgeist over a decade ago, with Sk8er Boi and Complicated, maybe the most ’90s songs ever released after the ’90s ended,” Franich writes. “We like to ascribe context to our musicians, but Lavigne arrived sans context in the midst of whatever pop-punk was.”
“There are serious questions about whether it’s offensive (expressionless Asian dancers, Tokyo-as-prop) or offensively obvious (this one’s for you, large Japanese fanbase!),” he goes on. “There are even more serious questions about the title, Hello Kitty, which is also like half of the lyrics, and which everyone agrees is a double entendre. … Hello Kitty feels like staring into the vacuum. Avril plays a guitar, but nothing comes out. She doesn’t really dance, but she doesn’t not dance. This is what pop wants to be, but also where pop came from: Alpha and Omega, retro-futuristic. Avril Lavigne never changed; the world just changed around her.”
Policymic doesn’t mince words about the song, immediately decrying the video, which was yanked from YouTube almost as soon as it debuted on Tuesday — but can still be viewed on Lavigne’s official website — as “racist.”

Mom attacks pit bull, bites off its ear to save daughter from being mauled to death
League City Police Department Mackenzi Plass, seen with the first responders who whisked her to the hospital, is recovering one month after a near-fatal pit bull attack. Her mom, Chelsi Camp, bit the ear off of the attacking dog.
Mike Tyson has got nothing on this heroic mom.
Chelsi Camp saved her 2-year-old daughter from a ruthless pit bull attack by biting the dog's ear off.
The Texas woman was dog-sitting her friend's usually friendly pit bull last month. That's when the dog approached her daughter, Mackenzi Plass, and things got ugly.
"The dog came up and he was just curious," Camp told Houston's KHOU. "When he smelled her, that's when you saw it flip because I think he smelled my dog on her."
The dog began attacking the little girl, and Camp was determined to save her daughter. Camp bit the dog's ear off and punched it in the mouth. Somehow, she managed to call 911 during the fight.
An officer responded and shot the pit bull, but didn't kill it. The dog was later euthanized.
A month later, Camp and Mackenzi are both recovering. Camp is back at work and can now use both of her arms. Mackenzi has scars on her face but gets her stitches out this week.

Jodie Foster marries girlfriend Alexandra Hedison

Well, she’s not single anymore.
Actress Jodie Foster married her girlfriend, photographer Alexandra Hedison over the weekend, according to various news reports.
Foster acknowledged her sexuality in a large scale announcement for the first time in a 2013 Golden Globes acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award. She nervously built up to her big reveal: “I am, uh, single.” It was a wink and a nod to the fact that her sexuality was something of an open secret in Hollywood, if you could even call it that. She hadn’t actively tried to conceal it, but she didn’t flaunt it, either.
I’m here being all confessional, and I guess I have a sudden urge to say something I’ve never really been able to air in public, a declaration that I’m a little nervous about but maybe not quite as nervous as my publicist right now — hi Jennifer — but I’m just going to put it out there, right, loud and proud. I’m going to need your support on this. I am, uh, single. Yes, I am. I am single. No, I’m kidding. I mean, I’m not really kidding, but I’m kind of kidding. I mean, thank you for the enthusiasm. Can I get a wolf whistle or something? I hope that you’re not disappointed that there won’t be a big coming out speech tonight because I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago back in the stone age, those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family and co-workers and then gradually, proudly, to everyone who knew her, to everyone she actually met. But now apparently, I’m told that every celebrity is expected to honor the details of their private life with a press conference, a fragrance,, and a prime-time reality show. And you guys might be surprised, but I am not Honey Boo Boo Child.
True to form, Foster, 51, declined to make a public statement about her nuptials. Her publicist would only confirm that the couple, who have been dating since last summer, had gotten married, E! reported. Hedison previously dated Ellen DeGeneres. They broke up in 2004.
Foster, who has been in the acting business for 48 years, has witnessed from the inside, the transformation of a business where homosexuality was — and, in some cases, still is — something to be shushed and hidden away to the point of covering it up with fake marriages. Before she was a successful daytime television and Oscar host, DeGeneres was a cautionary tale. Leading the life of an openly gay actor, especially one headlining Hollywood blockbusters, meant you disclosed details about your personal life with trusted friends and family, but didn’t necessarily show up at your premieres smooching your significant other.
Of course, that was also before TMZ. Now, 44 years after the Stonewall Riots, society expects its celebrities to be a little more forthcoming, a la Ellen Page, who recently came out in a speech at an LGBT youth conference in Las Vegas.
Foster’s move was similar to that of Good Morning America host Robin Roberts, who didn’t so much come out as publicly acknowledge her longtime partner, Amber Laign, in a Facebook post about her battle with cancer last year. Roberts didn’t actively conceal her orientation, either. She just didn’t shout about it.
But within the gay community, there has always been debate about how much disclosure is the “right” amount. CNN anchor Anderson Cooper was criticized for years as being closeted, despite the fact that the highly recognizable anchor was spotted at New York gay bars and frequently photographed with his boyfriend, Ben Maisani, with whom he owns a converted Manhattan firehouse. It was still a big deal when he formally came out in 2012. Cooper told Andrew Sullivan, “It’s become clear to me that by remaining silent on certain aspects of my personal life for so long, I have given some the mistaken impression that I am trying to hide something – something that makes me uncomfortable, ashamed or even afraid. This is distressing because it is simply not true.”
In her speech, Foster also recognized Cydney Bernard, her former partner of 20 years, and their children together. The two ended their 20-year relationship in 2008.
