Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin to reunite for Netflix sitcom


The Nine to Five actresses will star in Grace and Frankie, an 'anything but wholesome' comedy


Veteran Hollywood stars Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda will reunite for a new comedy created by Netflix. Tomlin, 74, and Fonda, 76, will play long-time rivals who are brought together after their husbands fall in love and plan to marry in Grace and Frankie. In the last chapter of their lives, the women find themselves suddenly relying on each other for support. NEWS: From Dust til Dawn, Netflix announce new series The single-camera comedy has been co-written by Friends creator Marta Kauffman, Howard J Morris, who has been Emmy-nominated for US sitcom Home Improvement and Paula Weinstein, who has won Golden Globe nominations and Emmy awards for her TV film production. Grace and Frankie will see Tomlin and Fonda reunite after starring alongside Dolly Parton in the 1980 feminist caper Nine to Five, in which the three women turn the tables on their chauvinist boss. Ted Sarandos, Netlix chief content officer, has said it was "an incredible privilege to give Fonda and Tomlin the opportunity to run riot" and promised that the sho would be "warm, very funny, and anything but wholesome". Grace and Frankie is the latest in a string of new comedies to focus on the older generations. In the UK, Last Tango in Halifax proved a hit for ITV and Mates, a pilot about three retired couples starring Alison Steadman and June Whitfield has been pitched to the BBC. Both Tomlin and Fonda have sustained their careers over a long period of time. Two-time Oscar winner Fonda's appearance in The Newsroom won her a 2013 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series and she recently appeared in The Butler. Tomlin, meanwhile won an Emmy in the same year for the HBO films An Apology to Elephants, which she co-executive produced and narrated. Dolly Parton will not be appearing in Grace and Frankie, however it was announced in February that she would be completing her current world tour with an appearance at Glastonbury, shortly after playing the O2 Arena in London.
